Wang Renmei, in her first starring role, plays Xiao Feng or “Little Wind.” She falls in love with Jiang Bo, a wealthy painter played by Jin Yan, who takes her from her little fishing village to his family’s mansion in Shanghai. Class differences prevail, however, and the couple is thrown out to live in a slum. Jiang takes the fall when Xiao Feng, now known as “Wild Rose,” finds a drunk’s purse in the snow. Jail and his family separate the couple until they are reunited in a crowd of military volunteers and march forward with an army of patriots.

The great actress Ruan Ling-yu earned international acclaim for her powerful performances in a series of social dramas made between 1927 and 1935. Her success brought her much fame; the pressure of that fame caused her to commit suicide at the age of 24.

In The Peach Girl, Ruan Ling-yu plays Lingu, a peasant girl, who falls in love with the landlord’s son De’en, played by Jin Yan, who fathers her child. He promises marriage but is forbidden by his mother to see her because of class differences. De’en finally come to Lingu’s side, as she lies dying. The landowner relents after her death and allows her son to raise the child.

Richard J Meyer’s book Jin Yan: The Rudolph Valentino of Shanghai tells the remarkable story of the “Emperor of Film,” who dominated the golden age of Chinese silent movies. Jin Yan co-stars with Ruan Ling-yu in The Peach Girl.

The CD contains 15 tracks, each of which is composed to underline the film’s characters and action. In Track 1, for example, you’ll hear The Goddess’ Theme Music, which appears throughout the score in many variations. Track 3 embodies the mood of Shanghai at night and in Track 5, you’ll hear the musical accompaniment to In the morning she returns to her son in their humble room. A beautiful, evocative score.
